Disney: There's Always Something New

We have been to Disney more times than I can count. And we still love it. Even though we have been so many times, we are still discovering new things.
On our last trip we found a not-so-hidden Barber Shop just past the entrance to the Magic Kingdom! So, we tried it out. It was a fun experience, fast, and quite reasonably priced.
Though it was new to us, the small three chair barber shop has been around for quite awhile. In fact, the barber who cut Avery's hair has been working at that same chair for well over a decade!

The name of the shop is Harmony. Would you believe that they even have a barber shop quartet that stops in to sing? Its Disney, so you'd better believe it! The Dapper Dans were not there when we were, but we have seen them strolling up and down Main Street before.

A "Where's Mickey?" Weekend

Chris and I always love to get away from the busy day-to-day happenings of home to focus on our family. The kids love the undivided attention: no work, no cell phones, all play. Okay, so we all love that. We hadn't vacationed to the beach in awhile, probably because we live so close to one. We decided to give it a try. It was a great weekend for the fam. We spent a lot of time together at Disney's Vero Beach resort. It was cozy, quiet, beautiful, and relaxing. The best part... we were together.

Where are the pictures? Sadly, our camera has died. Yes, died, and in d e a d. Sad, I know. so you will have to enjoy some stock photos and use your vivid imagination.

We told the kids we were going to Disney's Vero Beach ... Avery and Mary Hannah were quite confused. Where were the rides? Where's Mickey??? They really enjoyed the beach, the "water shooter" (Avery's name for the water slide), the kid's pirate ship water play area, the playground, the mini golf, and even the sing along campfire with ooey gooey smores... But, according to the two smallest travelers in our party, something was missing.

So on Sunday, we checked out of our hotel and decided to forego the beach to go find the missing piece of the puzzle. We drove a short hour and 45 minutes to Walt Disney World... and, yes, Mickey. We spent the day hopping from park to park, starting at the favorite Hollywood Studios. After riding many rides and greeting characters, we took a boat on over to Epcot where we had a delightfully surprising lunch at our fav. restaurant, Le Cellier, in Canada. We were fortunate to get a last minute reservation. Okay, okay ... so the kids weren't as pumped as Chris and me. In fact, Hannah was so wiped out that she fell asleep in her highchair. I wish I had a picture of that. It was priceless.

Avery said, as we were walking through Hollywood Studios, after riding his new favorite ride, Toy Story Mania, "Mom and Dad, Can I just never leave?" We laughed. I think that he caught the spirit of us all. We love to be together. Wouldn't it be great if we could live life on vacation?

In other news...
It was the weekend of the Disney marathon. Talk about an in-your-face challenge! There were all kinds of people running through the parks. That's right, the marathons snake through the parks! People line the streets, cheer, hoot and holler, ring cow bells, wave banners and signs, and encourage the 22, 000 runners to finish their race. Young and old, thin and not-so-thin. I am totally intimidated, but I am considering it. Chris is all about it. He was wanting to jump right in. But that would've been awkward. Maybe next year, maybe next year. I really don't love running. But I do think the whole concept is a good one: its not about the run, its about the discipline.

3 of my cousins ran in the half marathon. Kudos to Rob, Kim, and Jaimie for completing the 13.1 mile run. You are impressive!

Disney on a Dime - Part 1: Preparation

You can go to Disney. Its "The Happiest Place on Earth!" You know you want to go, but are not really sure about it because your bank is not as loaded as you'd like it to be or your kids are little, take naps and have occasional tantrums. Well rest easy, my friends, because old Hughesey is going to give you a little lesson on how to do Disney. We are not "experts," but we have been enough times to write an informal blog about our experiences. We have weeded out the bad and the ugly and are sharing the "good" part with you!

Part 1 = Preparation and Packing

We have little kids and a small budget. These steps have helped us in many ways: save money, take it easy, have enough "supplies" to get through a week of vacation.

Bring the kids' food. Don't buy it at the parks. It saves money and keeps life (and the potty) "normal" for the kids. And yes, Disney does allow this food into the park. We pack it in our backpack and enter without a problem.

Stock up before you drive up. Several days before the trip, we go to Walmart to buy food. All the food that we can bring for the kids' meals AND some snacks for the big kids. We buy things that don't have to be refrigerated. Our food covers breakfast, lunch, most of dinner for the kids (we bring the fruit, veggies, drink and buy the meat), and snacks for everyone. Our stock looks like this:

  • bread

  • juice boxes (apple, OJ, milk - yes, milk. Lil' Milk brand doesn't have to be refrigerated)

  • fruit cups

  • applesauce cups

  • veggie cups (peas, carrots, green beans...the plastic cups are even microwaveable!)

  • peanut butter

  • jelly (the only thing that should be kept on ice)

  • chips

  • pretzels

  • granola bars

  • fruit snacks

  • bottled water

  • powerade

  • More to come on feeding kids in the park....

Buy the souvenirs BEFORE you arrive at the park. After stocking up on the groceries, we stock up on gifts for the kids. We were able to buy a Disney outfit, hat, shoes, and necklace/lanyard for each child for the cost of buying one souvenir at the gift shop. Walmart has Disney brand merchandise with the favorite Lightning McQueen, Princesses, and Mickey/Minnie characters. Its like seeing Christmas morning all over again when the kids discover these surprise gifts. More on that later. But for now, just know that its better to buy BEFORE than to buy at the park.

Pack lightly and do laundry if you need to. Yes, I did just say that. Its better to pack lightly than to try to fit your entire closet into a suitcase. And then that suitcase into the car.... especially when you are packing extra food, supplies, a stroller, kids, your spouse.... ok you get the point.... This means that you will also take small amounts of laundry soap and stain remover. Bring it. You may not end up using it, but it sure beats paying $5 for a single use size detergent! And NO, laundry at Disney is NOT the same as laundry at your house. You will not spend all day doing it! Just one load, or maybe two. They have lots of coin operated washing machines and dryers. You will only spend an 1 1/2 hours or so doing laundry... enough for a wash and a dry... just about the same as your child's nap time. (Its a good idea to take naps. More on that later.) Or maybe you will do it as you all swim in the pool. (At Pop Century the laundry area is right by the pool... very convenient! Not a big deal... and a great relief when their new clothes are covered in chocolate ice cream! Not to mention how much a person can sweat in the summer in Orlando. It was 98 degrees when we were there! Our clothes were happy to be washed! And if you just need to freshen an item or two, wash them in the sink. Wipe the sink with a disinfecting wipe (which you will bring after reading the next item), add a drop of soap and water. Hang to dry. Whalaa! Clean clothes to wear again tomorrow.

Bring disinfecting wipes. Little hands touch everything... and there are many things to touch! We wipe down the table, chairs, counters, phone, remote control, door knobs, sink, and even the bathtub if we are feeling particularly germie. It is a relief to know that it HAS been cleaned and the kids can roam free.

Other notables to plan on packing:
  • camera, video camera

  • stroller (do bring your own if you can. the rentals are NOT comfy for little ones, and are expensive $12-$24 per park/per day!)

  • 2 pairs shoes (you never know when it will rain)

  • poncho (ditto above)

  • kids' sippy cups (1 for each child. extremely useful for keeping hydrated in the park)

  • dish soap (just a little bit to wash out the sippy cups that are bound to be thrown from the stoller or roll on the nasty restaurant floor.)

  • your own pillow

  • kids' pillow, blankie, stuffed animal... a piece of comfort from home.

  • You don't have to bring the pack and play. Disney does have these. We have used them. They are nice. They set it up in the room for you, and put clean sheets on it just like the bed. But if you feel best about your own you should pack it.

Tip for the crib/bed dilema:

Our daughter sleeps in a crib at home, but hates pack-n-plays. So we brought an inflatable air mattress. We put it on the floor of the hotel room, requested and extra set of sheets. She was sleeping happily with her pillow and blanket from home. Yes, it did take a few times of walking her back to bed before she learned to stay there. It helps that the kids are soooo exhausted by the time bedtime rolls around, they don't get up. This is a helpful transition for us. We plan on switching to a big girl bed pretty soon!

Check back soon for Part 2 - Arrival, Getting started at Disney

Eating at Disney

So you have read about packing lunch and dinner for the kids. But what about food for the big kids? Or what if you don't want to pack a meal and you just want to eat in the park? NO prob. Or what if you do pack and meal for the kids but you are way over greasy french fries and hamburgers. Don't worry. There is more to Disney Dining than that! Old Hughesey is going to help you out... One word... EPCOT!

Yes, EPCOT has the best food. In addition to what you might consider "typical park fare"( ie: hamburger, hotdog, chicken strips) almost every country has a restaurant. You can have Chinese, Japanese, American, German, Italian, French, Mexican, Moroccan, and beyond.

Our absolute FAVORITE fairly priced findings are in the newly renovated "The Land" pavillion. The restaurant called "Seasons" has four different stations with many choices ranging from fresh deli sandwiches, soup and salad, and chinese food to rotisserie chicken and grilled salmon, all ranging in price from $6 -$9. It is also one great deal for kids. A kids' meal costs $4.50 and includes a main dish, two sides, and a drink. Our kids love a chicken drumstick, creamy mashed potatoes, buttery steamed carrots, and Chocolate milk. Mary Hannah scarfed down mac and cheese, grapes, chocolate pudding, and whole milk.

And I almost forgot to mention their desserts. Freshly made strawberry shortcake, cheesecake, fruit tarts, keylime pie, hand dipped ice cream and more. LOTS of food for a great price! An added bonus is that the new attraction Soarin' is also in this same pavillion. So there are rides to enjoy after eating.

Our absolute FAVORITE splurge is Canada.

Le Cellier Steakhouse serves fresh dishes perpared by chefs. It is simply delicious, and the most popular restaurant. That is why reservations are a MUST, and even then it can be booked months in advance. So make your dinner reservation at he same time that you make your hotel reservation. The menu changes frequently. This visit I enjoyed a Salmon BLT with a pear and endive salad. Chris had the New York Strip with Yukon Gold Potatoes. How's that for park food? Yes... I know... good, huh?
